Moses Goodwin was born in England and came to the United States when he was a young man. While he was on a ship crossing the ocea, he met and Married Jane Smithwick on March 6, 1861. Jane was born in Ireland in 1830 and died at Correctionville in 1876. The young couple settled in Eastern Iowa.

A son, Samuel H Goodwin was born November 27, 1868, at Spring Lake near Nashua, Iowa.

During the summer of 1869, the family moved to Union Township, Woodbury County.

The family came in a covered wagon drawn by two oxen named Duke and Dime. They along with Jane’s sister and her husband, Mr & Mrs Harry H Smithwick and son, Henry and a family by the name of Sullivan came together.

The group arrived in Woodbury County on July 5, 1869. Moses and Jane’s son, Samuel, was nine months old at that time.

The Goodwins settled on the Norwest quarter of Section three, Union Township. The Smithwicks settled on the West half of the Northeast quarter of section ten, Union Township.

It is believed that Moses served in the Civil War as a Northern Soldier and that he was a farmer.
