Benjamin Franklin Glover
By Leona Glover Davis

Benjamin Franklin Glover, brother of William and Thomas, and son of Thomas Jefferson and Margaret Lambert Glover and grandson of Thomas Jefferson and Martha Gilliam Glover, was born September 9, 1844, in Carter County, Kentucky.

Thomas Jefferson and Martha Gilliam Glover were given land-grants in Virginia written on sheepskin by King George III of England. Martha passed away in 1866 at age 110 years; she had been blind the last fifty years of her life. Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin’s grandfather was a captain in the War of 1812. He was also an astronomer and prophesied many things which came true.

1n 1857 Benjamin moved with his parents to St Louis County, Missouri, where he resided until after the outb reak of the Civil War. During the war he was a non-contest, but frequently taken prisoner, first by the Confederates and then by the Federals, but was never held long by either side. He quite steadily declined to ally himself with the Confederate bodies operating in the state. This placed him under the ban of both parties and resulted in his frequent arrest and imprisonment by both sides of the conflict.

In the early days of his manhood, Benjamin twice crossed the plains from Nebraska City, Nebraska to Denver, Colorado, with ox teams, pulling freighters. This was amost dangerous task, considering the daring and desperate attacks made by the Indians, the scarcity of water, and the slow process of travel.

Benjamin F Glover and Lucinda Ellen Clark were married April 1, 1869. They lived in Fremont County, Iowa, where their first two children were born: Essie Laura, born December 11, 1874; and Clara Maud ‘Maud’, born June 18, 1881.

In 1882, Benjamin and his family and a brother, Wailliam, and family moved to Woodbury County. They bought timberland in Lakeport Township, where the brothers operated a sawmill for a number of years. Here, their son, James Cleveland, was born January 3, 1885. Essie, Maud and James ‘Jim’ attended the Glover School.

After disposing of his sawmill interest, he and his family moved to Sloan in 1901, where they resided until his death on February 20, 1921. Lucinda passed away July 20, 1924.

One mile north of the Glover School was a store on one corner, which was operated by Ellis Copple’s father. Across the road on another corner, was a church; Benjamin was a minister for this church at one time. After he moved to Sloan he had a church called the Apostolic Holiness Church. Rev Stocker was the minister there in 1921. Benjamin was converted in 1896 and was a devout Christian.

Essie Laura Glover, daughter of Benjamin F and Lucinda Glover, was born December 11, 1874, in Fremont County, Iowa. She came with her parents to Lakeport Township in 1882 and grew up there attending the Glover School.

On March 16, 1892, she married Henry Johnson ‘Johnson’ Shannon of Lakeport Township. He was born April 15, 1866, and passed away September 2, 1943.

Essie’s father built a house at the east end of his 80 acres for Essie and Johnson to live in. This would be across the road and p a lane from where Arthur Drossel now lives. Perhaps the house is no longer thre. They also lived on the Wilcox farm at one time, and on another farm near Sloan, then on the Stoddard farm north of Sloan for many years, (this house has been torn down).

They had five chidlren. Rozella Muriel was born December 21, 1892, near Sloan. She graduated from Sloan High School and married William Telfer on June 20, 1920. They lived in Sioux City for a few years, and then moved to California in the 1920’s. They had a son.

Luella Pearl ‘Pearl’ was born November 20, 1894, near Sloan and graduated from Sloan High School. She married Wallace Squires on November 1, 1919. They had one daughter, Margaret; they later moved to California. Pearl is 89 years old and lives in Texas.

Hazel Elizabeth, born April 19, 1898, near Sloan, graduated from Sloan High School. She married Cecil Bays, June 2, 1923, and lived in Sioux City, later moving to California. They had no children and both have passed away.

Benjamin Franklin ‘Frank’, born March 25, 1900, near Sloan, attended Sloan School, and never married. He lived in Woodbury County until he had a stroke and was taken to a nursing home in Onawa, Iowa, where he passed away July 6, 1982.

Merrill James was born January 20, 1904 near Sloan. He attended Sloan School, never married, and lived in Woodbury County all his life. He passed away January 26, 1953.

William Glover Forsyth Shannon ‘Billy’, adopted, attended Sloan School, graduating from there. He moved to California and married Betty Jeanette Jaynes, June 19, 1953. He has passed away.
