Alden is the son of Arthur Levi and Ethel ‘Effie’ Moad Erskine, born May 2, 1901, Ticonic, Monona County, Iowa. He went to public school in Nebraska and also to the Nebraska School of Agriculture. He took home courses in Business and Salesmanship and entered in the automotive business in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1922.

He married Sarah Ann Pippett on August 17, 1932. Sarah was born November 17, 1905, in Loogantee, Indiana. They belong to the Grace United Methodist Church. Among the lsit of accomplishments Alden has achieved, he is also listed in Who’s Who in America under Conservation Interst.

He was State Senator from Woodbury County, Sioux City, Iowa, elected for two terms, 1966-70 and 1970-74; Chairman of Parks & Conservation in the State Senate for Iowa; National President of Izaak Walton League two years 1961-62; and held some offices from 1948-1983, such as President, Local Chapter, three years, National Treasurer, five years; National Executor Board, President of Endowments, 1964-1983; now President-Emeritus; President of Sioux City Hiking Club, 1983; has been a member since 1935; President to Morningside Commercial Club in 1957 when the Morningside Post Office was built; an organizer of the Floyd Valley Water Shed Association; President of Sioux City Bird Club; active in Lewis & Clark Historical Association; instrumental in establishing the Siux City Replica of the Washington Monument Historical Site; and served on the board of Woodbury County Conservation at Smithland, Iowa.

The Erskines don’t have children of their own, but for nieces and nephews their home has always been open. In 1982, they celebrated fifty years of marriage. Alden has one sister, Alma Russell of Fullerton, Nebraska, and a brother Sewell of the State of Washington.
