Anthony and Pauline (Braunger) Duling
By Katherine Duling and Hoffman and Dr John L Duling

Anthony Duling was the second son of Matthew and Gertrude (Schwingler) Duling. He was born in 1883 and died in 1942. In 1914, he married Pauline Braunger, 1888-1966, a teacher of German and Latin at Emerson High School, Emerson, Nebraska, and a daughter of John, 1856-1892, and Elizabeth (Reiboldt) Braunger, 1864-1949, of Wayne, Nebraska. Her uncle was Anthony Braunger of A Braunger Produce in Sioux City, and Pauline spent many days with hs family during her youth.

Five children were born to this family: John Matthew, born 1915; Paul Anthony, born 1916; Mary Elizabeth, born 1921; and Isabelle Claire, born 1924. Grandfather Matthew lived to see only one grandchild, for he died of cancer just before the birth of Paul Anthony in 1916.

John Matthew, the eldest child of Anthony and Pauline Duling, attended Blessed Sacrament School, Central High School, Annapolis Naval Academy, and The University of Southern California (USC), terminating his education with a Masters Degree. He served as a coach, teacher, dean, and president of a junior college (East Los Angeles Jr College). In 1941, John Matthew married Florence Oberc of Beverly Hills. They have a daughter, Elaine (Duling) Baxter, wife of Dr James Baxter, University of Virginia; and a son, John Matthew Duling , an attorney at Santa Rosa, California. John and Florence live in a lovely home in San Marino, California, where they have bee for over thirty years.

Paul Anthony, now residing in Camarillo, lived at the Anthony-Pauline Duling residence on 24th Street in Sioux City until he left to attend the University of Southern California, where he received his Masters Degree in Chemistry. He worked for many years as the chief chemist for Coca-Cola. In 1940, he married Dorothy (Corley) Duling, 1917-1968, of Sioux City. Four children blessed this union: Barbara (Duling( Gregoire of San Jose, California; James E Duling of Portland, Oregon; Paula (Duling) Bowen, a teacher in Los Angeles; and Dennis B Duling of Altadena, California. In 1969, long after the death of his wife, Dorothy, Paul remarried Beth S (Axtell) Duling. The Paul Dulings have three grandchildren.

Mary E Duling married Joseph C Lease of Sioux City in 1942. They are both recent retirees, he as coach, teacher, and principal in Sacramento, and she as a secretary at American River College. Both have had an interesting and challenging life in rearing three children: Marcia L (Lease) Jensen, wife of William M Jensen, an accountant in Stockton, California; Thomas Lease, a designer; and Matthew J Lease, a recent graduate of Sacramento State University. Joseph was graduated from Morningside College. Mary and Joseph lived also in King City, California, and now are in Sacramento, where Joe had teaching and administrative assignments, and Mary worked as a secretary. The Leases have two grandchildren, daughters of the Jensens.

Katherine (Duling) and Wilbur ‘Bill’ Hoffman presently live at Folsom, California, having retired, but not having stopped being busy. Katherine, a graduate of University of California at Los Angeles, a teacher, married Bill, originally from Carroll, Iowa, in 1949. Katherine attended Blessed Sacrament School, Central High School, and UCLA. Three children blessed the union of Katherine and Bill: David Wilbur Hoffman, born 1950; Phillip J Hoffman, 1953-1980; and Jeanmarie T Hoffman, born 1956. Bill has worked as a manufacturer’s representative, land developer, and investor. Katherine and Bill both have regularly been involved in the services and work for the Catholic Church. Katherine has a ‘green thumb’, as was evident formt ehmagnificent gardens she has nurtured at their beautiful home on Wilhof Lane, a part of a land development which houses large homes on three-acre lots. Bill still is active as a golfer, and nobody counts him ‘out’ in a tournament. Katherine’s latest involvement is a research regarding family history. She always a top student in anything she did, so these efforts should be outstanding!

Isabelle ‘Trudy’ Claire Duling married Arthur C Lousen, from Butte, Montana, in 1948. Trudy attended Blessed Sacrament School, Central High School, and Los Angeles Community College. Art and Trudy have four children: Janet (Lousen) Maehl , born 1949; Richard Lousen, born 1950; Margaet (Lousen) Bowles, born 1952; and Roger Lousen, born 1956. The Lousens reside in La Crescenta, California, as do their childrenm all except Margaret, who lives in Point Arena, California. Art and Trudy have four grandchildren.
