Walter J and Helen Jane (Cromwell) Clemens

Walter J Clemens and Helen Jane Cromwell were married in 1873 in New York state. With three young boys, they traveled by covered wagon to Minnesota and Iowa, where they faremd outside of Sioux City. Walter J was born in LeRoy, New York, in 1848 and died in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1909. Helen was born in Peoria, New York, in 1849 and died in Sioux City in 1925. Both are buried at Graceland Cemetery. Their sons were George Wallace (1874-1918); John Jacob (1876-1944); and Walter Robert (1882-1943).

George Wallace Clemens was born in Pavilion, New York, in 1874. He married Mertie Cross of Sioux City in1900. Mertie was born in 1878 at Brooklyn, Iowa, and died in 1964 at Sioux City, Iowa. George died in Madison, South Dakota, in 1918, leaving his wife with two daughters, Helen and Ruth. Helen Clemens was born in 1904 at Holland, Minnesota. She died at Sioux City in 1927. Ruth, born in 1907, also at Holland, Minnesota, married Benjamin Redington in Sioux City in 1938. They had two children, Benjamin and Betty, born in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1940 and 1943-44 respectively. Ruth is now living with her son and his family in Eastman, Wisconsin. Benjamin Jr married Sharon Van, and they have three sons: Ben (1964), Andy (1967) and Chad (1969), all born in Waunakie, Wisconsin. George, Helen and Mertie are all buried at Graceland Cemetery in Sioux City.

John Jacob Clemens was born in Perry, New York, in 1876. He married Bertha Walsh of Sioux City in 1900. John died in Austin, Minnesota, in 1944, and is buried there. Bertha died in Tucson, Arizona, and is buried there. They had three sons, John, Earl and Ralph. John Everett Clemens was born in Sioux City on 1902. His wife’s name was Virginia. They live in Bellows Falls, Vermont, and had a daughter born there. Earl Vincent Clemens, born at Sioux City in 1905, was married and divorced. He had an adopted daughter, Earline. Ralph Cromwell Clemens, born in 1907, at Sioux City, married Thelma. Their son, ValJon, was born in 1943 at Austin, Minnesota.

Walter Robert Clemens was born in LeRoy, New York, in 1882. He married Lily (Christina Alexandria) Amundson at Ruthton, Minnesota, in 1911. Lily was born in Oslo (Kristiana) Norway in 1886 and came to the USA and Sioux City with her parents, Christian and Anna Marie Amundson, in 1888. Walter worked for International Harvester Company. He died in Sioux City in 1943. Lily died in Sioux City in 1937. They had two children, Doris and Wayne. Wayne Robert, born in Sioux City in 1917, died in 1934. Walter, Lily and Wayne are all buried at Graceland Cemetery. Doris Geanette Clemens, born in Sioux City in 1915, married Robert W Hendrickson in 1945. Robert was born in Sioux City, also, in 1914. Their daughter, Janice Mari, was born July 11, 1946, at Omaha, Nebraska. She married Brian E Petersen on May 21, 1977, at Tigard, Oregon. Doris and Robert Henderson make their home in Tigard, Oregon.
