Susan Lasby, born in Staffordshire, England, February 1, 1821, came to America about 1836 at the age of 16. She married Charles Crowther, born in London, England, on March 24, 1837. Charles came through Canada and walked the entire distance to Kenosha, Wisconsin. Their children were: Joseph David, born March 6, 1838; Charles Henry, born March 17, 1840; Mary Ann, born January 18, 1842; Oliver Samuel, born January 2, 1944; Marshall Edwin, born March 11, 1846; James Albert, born April 3, 1848; George Wallace, born August 25, 1849; Harriet Ellen, born February 22, 1852; and Alonzo William, born April 24, 1854. The above children were all born at Kenosha, Wisconsin. The remaining five, born at Bradford, Wisconsin were: Walter M J, born January 21, 1856; Susan Evelyn, born May 27, 1858; Elizabeth Margaret, born April 12, 1860; Clara Amelia (Grandmother of Lewis Cooper), born May 6, 1862; and Charles Franklin, born April 17, 1865.

The 1880 census in Union Township shows Susan, Alonzo, Frankie, Walter, and Clara living in this township. Also, James, his wife, daughter Ethel, and son Frankie were living there. The story handed down is that Susan, the mother, and five younger children came from Janesville, Wisconsin, to Woodbury County in a covered wagon. Some of theolder boys were already in Iowa.

Charles died in 1865 in Wisconsin. Susan died in 1908. She, her daughter, Libby (Elizabeth), and granddaughters, Maudie and Feleta Payne, are buried at Good Hope Cemetery at Correctionville, Iowa.

Clara married Frank Payne. Their children were Maudie, Feleta, Grace (Lewis’ mother), Frank, and Margaret. Frank Payne, Sr, ran an elevator (grain) at Thief River Falls, Minnesota. He died there of pneumonia at an early age. Clara and the children came back to Iowa, where she later married Revilo Gutheridge and had two sons, Victor and Wilbur. Wilbur lived at Anthon and had one son.

Grace married Chancey Cooper, son of Francis Lewis and Margaret (Jones) Cooper, on September 9, 1908, at Sioux City. Grace was born November 5, 1889, at Beamsiding, North Dakota, and died January 23, 1971, at Kansas City, Missouri. Chancey was born November 13, 1886, at Washta, and died June 4, 1959, at Branson, Missouri. Athey had eight children: Lewis Francis, born December 24, 1909, at Washta; Wayne Quitan, born May 25, 1911, died May 1919; Oren Russel, born July 18, 1912; Clayton Payne, born August 21, 1914; Marnes Theo, born June 11, 1916; Dorothy Bernice, born October 31, 1919; died April 23, 1939, at Springfield, Missouri; Dale Richard, born June 11, 1922, died December 6, 1944, at Leyte, Phillipine Islands (Dale was a paratrooper), and Clara Margaret, born November 27, 1925.

Lewis farmd east of Oto, for a number of years. On November 24, 1941, he married Mamie Stanly, daughter of Joseph and Seba (Mead) Stanly, at Forsythe, Missouri. They have eight children: Lewis Joseph, born July 25, 1942, at Oto; Clifford Burton, born February 6, 1944, at Oto; Ruthann Estella, born August 28, 1945, at Ladysmith, Wisconsin; Grace Marie, born March 22, 1947, at Ladysmith; Francis Stanly, born January 13, 1949, at Ladysmith; Lynn Allen, born August 1, 1951, at Ladysmith; Steven Dale, born March 18, 1953, at Ladysmith; and Deborah Susan, born September 30, 1957, at Ladysmith.

Lewis J has four children and lives in Minneapolis. Clifford has three daughters and lives at Stone Lake. Ruthann no children and lives at Minneapolis. Francis has no children and lives at Ladysmith. Lynn had four children and lives at Ladysmith. Steven has no children and lives at Mesa, Arizona. Deborah has one son and lives at Stone Lake, Wisconsin.

With Lewis, Jr, and Clifford, the Coopers moved via emigrant car to Ladysmith, Wisconsin, in 1944. There they have been engaged in farming.
