Grandmother Maria J. Svenson

Only information I have on my paternal grandmother Maria Jenette Svenson; aka Mary) is that she was born in Fremont, MN 1867-1872 but raised in Ossian, Iowa. ONLY record I can find of her existence is the January 1895 Iowa census of Military & she is listed as Marie Svenson; her daughter Mabel Josephine Svenson and a gentleman John Halverson (perhaps her maternal grandfather???). She married my grandfather Rudolph Johnson in March of 1895; they relocate to MN & remain there until their deaths. WHY can I not find any history of Maria / Mary in Ossian if she was raised there? No school, church, census, cemeteries ... HELP.
