JOHN OSSIAN PORTER
I am looking for any information on John Ossian Porter who was the first white settler in Ossian, Iowa, Military Township. I do not know the name of his wife. One of his son's is Orville Porter (a.k.a. Obe Porter). 1849-1938. Orville Porter married Sarah Ellen Chance in 1875.

Possible names of his John Porter's other children are Harry Porter or Myron Porter. Possibly 4 children or more?

It is family lore that John Ossian Porter was driven from the town for being a sympathizer. (Probably the civil war). His barn was painted yellow. He left town, abandoning his wife and children in Ossian. The family remained in Ossian until 1866 when they moved to Hampton, Iowa. They then left Hampton for Crawford County Kansas. In 1871 they returned to Hampton, Iowa.

Can anyone verify this as fact or fiction? Or tell me anything about John Porter's family?

Thank you! Please respond via email.
