In Response To: St Clement's Church records (Jane Kuhn)

Jane:

I suggest a few possible sources to assist you. The first would be St. Wenceslaus Church in Spillville. My gg grandparents are buried in the cemetery at St. Clement's. But my gg uncle, one of the early members of St. Clement's Church, was buried at St. Wenceslaus. My understanding is that as a pioneer church, it did not have the extensive official record-keeping as with most other "official" churches in the diocese. It is possible records may have been transferred to St. Wenceslaus. Msgr. Donald Hawes is the current pastor there. I worked with him in our parish in Waterloo when he was assigned there.

I have also come across information that the German Department at Luther College in Decorah a student research project was working on a history of the church in conjunction with the “The Spillville Area Czech-American Heritage Experience." Perhaps they would have documentation and church records as part of their research.

The third source which may steer you in the right direction I suggest is the Archdiocese of Dubuque.

I hope this gets you where you need to go to get the information.
