Caroline Lechtenberg

Caroline H. Lechtenberg died Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa. She was 96 years of age. Caroline was born on August 16, 1909, the daughter of Nicholas and Anna (Schmitz) Schissel in rural Ossian. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. Francis de Sales in Ossian and attended St. Francis de Sales School. On October 21, 1930, she was united in marriage to Joseph Lechtenberg in Rochester, MN. They were the parents of six children: James, Mark, Duane, Kay, Joyce and Mary.

Caroline and Joe purchased a farm near Ossian and together they farmed and raised their children. Caroline enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, cooking and playing cards. She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, its Rosary Society, and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court #983.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Ossian, Iowa, on January 20, 2006 with Msgr. Cletus J. Hawes officiating.

Casketbearers were Ron Lechtenberg, Mike Lechtenberg, David Lechtenberg, Grant Gerleman, Greg Jenks, Gary Lechtenberg, Steve Lechtenberg, Warren Gerleman, and Chad Canaday. Interment was at St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian.

She is survived by one son: James (Edna) Lechtenberg of Postville; three daughters, Kay (Bill) Canaday of Arvada, CO, Joyce (Clark) Gerleman of Elizabeth, IL, and Mary (Joe) Jenks of Roswell, GA; two daughters-in-law, Mary Lechtenberg of Ossian and Jeanne Hageman of Decorah. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and sisters-in-law Hildegard Schissel of Ossian, Odelia (Leander) Cremer of Calmar, Rita (Linus) Bodensteiner of New Hampton, Phyllis Lechtenberg of Festina and a brother-in-law, Andrew Hemesath of Ossian.

Caroline was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 9, 2001, two sons, Duane on April 6, 1988 and Mark on February 1, 1997; one grandson, Joe on December 10, 1991; three brothers, Joe, Ray and Merle Schissel; two sisters, Eleanor Scheidel and Ethel Holthaus.
