Decorah Republican January 18, 1923

James Madden died very suddenly at his room in the Higgins Block, Monday evening about 6:30 O'Clock. He was in the habit of getting his meals from Mrs. Higgins and Monday evening he had supper in his room. After he had finished eating George Higgins went to get, him a drink of water and was not gone over a minute or so, but on his return he found Mr. Madden dead. He had passed away without a struggle. what is the cause is not known. He was about on Monday as usual and had made no complaint of feeling unwell. The deceased was born in Ireland in May 1834 consequently he was almost 87 years of age.
He came to this country on July 4th 1854 and after the Civil War located on a farm in Bluffton township which he cultivated until afew years ago when it was turned over to his nephew Richard Madden. He never married and the only relatives left in this country are his nephew and a neice. He was a cousin of the late Richard Madden. Funeral was held yesterday at St. Benedict's church and interment in the Bluffton cemetery.
