Margaret Madden, one of Decorah's well known and beloved pioneer mothers, passed to her eternal reward Sunday afternoon, December 23, 1928 at
her home on East Main Street.

She had been a long and patient sufferer.

Five years ago last May she suffered a stroke and she had been confined to her bed continuosly and was most tenderly cared for by her devoted daughter Mary who remained her constant nurse and companion devoting every energy of her love and affection to her.

Margaret Ann Harmon as a daughter of Barney Elizabeth Fox Harmon and was born in Akron Ohio, May 10, 1845. She came here with her parents when about five years of age. She was united in marriage to Richard Madden, who was one of Decorah's pioneer blacksmiths and horseshoers, the marriage taking place at Lansing, Iowa. They came to Decorah remaining for a short time then went south during the Civil War times to Memphis, Tenn. where they resided sometime. The eldest son, Edward, now deceased, was born in Memphis.

They returned to Decorah again and the family home had been here for over fifty years. The husband and father passed away ten years ago on January 25. Three children survive. They are Perry, Bluffton Township, William St. Paul and Mary, Decorah. William arrived Sunday night. Two brothers and one sister also survive. They are Attorney M. A. Harmon of Decorah, Joseph Harmon of Duluth, and Mrs. Catherine Keefe of Decorah. Three grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive.

In the death of Mrs. Madden, a good woman has gone to her heavenly reward. She was a woman who was esteemed highly by many friends and was always radiating sunshine and happiness proving a devoted wife and mother, true christian friend. During her life she was agreat lover of flowers and while able to look after them, her yard and home was like a veritable greenhouse. In her passing the sympathy of many friends is extended to her bereaved children, brothers and sister in their loss. The funeral services were held last Wednesday morning at nine o'clock from St. Beneduct's Catholic Church. Rev. Father Hogan officiated and interment was in the Catholic cemetery.
