THE SILENT REAPER.
Godfried Heuser, one of the oldest of the surviving pioneers of Winneshiek county, died Monday evening last at his home on Washington street, after an illness of about two weeks from the effects of a severe cold. That he was ill was known to comparatively few, and news of his death was a painful surprise. Though well advanced in years, Mr. Heuser enjoyed so many of the characteristics of younger men and retained his faculties so well that one did not think of his age. Although he was not lacking in decision or force of character, he seemed always to look upon life from the sunny side, and his greetings were ever accompanied by a happy smile that etokened{sic} the warmth of friendship he felt for those about him. And the world was better for his being in it, because his was a kind and helpful nature, ever ready to do his part in any good work.
Mr. Heuser was born May 20, 1835{?}, in Zurich, Switzerland. In 1856 he emigrated to America, coming to Winneshiek county and acquiring a farm near Spillville. On October 29, 1861, he was married to Fredericka Fogle{sic}. To them six children were born. They are Robert, who resides on the old home farm, Fredericka (Mrs. Albert Rordorf), and Frederick, of Spillville, Maggie (Mrs. Fred Herold of Oelwein), Henry, living in Minnesota, and Bertha, (Mrs. Carl Frey of Sumner township).
A dozen or more years ago Mr. and Mrs. Heuser purchased the Hinterman place (now owned by Wm. Ronan) about a half mile west of town, where they resided until nine years ago when they purchased the home on Washington St. where they have since resided. Mr. Heuser’s death is the first break in the family circle, and in their bereavement his wife and children have the sympathy of a host of friends.
The funeral will be held this morning at ten o’clock at the house, and the remains will be taken to Spillville for burial in the Haug cemetery. Rev. M. Willett will conduct the service and accompany the funeral party to Spillville.Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone shows he was born in 1840, which does not agree with the above, and his first name was spelled Gottfried. Find a Grave shows his wife’s maiden name is spelled Vogler. It shows he died Mar. 16, 1915.
