Rita Snyder age 82 of Decorah, IA passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Wellington Place in Decorah.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, December 20, 2024, at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, 1725 Washington Prairie Rd., rural Decorah with Rev. Kim Smith presiding. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Helms Funeral Home - 306 E. Water St., in Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Friday morning.

Rita was born in Decorah, Iowa on October 22nd, 1942, to Alice and Leo Hammel. She graduated from Decorah High School. She met the love of her life, Duane Snyder during high school and they were married at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church on April 7th, 1962. They were active members of the church their entire lives.

Rita worked at Luther College for 30 years as an Admin Assistant in the Career Center, the Preus Library, and the Counseling Center and was adored by many students and staff members.

Rita loved her group of friends, and she gained many over the years as an active member of several clubs including Coffee Club, Card Club, Church Circle, Garden Club, and Book Club. Rita enjoyed baking, sewing, and gardening. Duane and Rita would spend a whole weekend making lefse or baking cookies and bars. In their younger years, they spent many weekends camping, square dancing, and socializing with friends.

Rita was loved by all who knew her. She was sweet and kind and funny. She was quick with a smile and was always up for a fun gathering, especially those where she was surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She will be missed by so many.

Rita is survived by her daughter: Kim (Steve) Pettit, sons: Brian (Jody), Steven (Dana), and David (Tron), grandchildren: Lindsey (Derek), Leah (Jordan), Drew, Lily, Mya, Abby, Kinzie, Ryann, great grandchild Quinn, brothers Richard (Barb) and Roger, sister-in-law Leona Rosendahl, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Wellington Place and WinnMed Hospice nursing staff for their compassion and care.
