Gary Ames, age 84, of Calmar, IA passed away Friday, December 6, 2024, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin, MN.A private graveside service will be held at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in McGregor, IA.
Celebration of Life will be held at Pivo Brewery 101 Huber Dr. Calmar, IA 52132, on December 13, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to wear their Iowa Hawkeye apparel in memory of Gary.
Gary Wendell Ames was born on February 9, 1940, the son of Vernon and Virginia (Martin) Ames. He graduated from MarMac High School in 1958. He served in the United States Army from 1960 - 1963.
On November 30, 1963, he married Juanita Edwards at the United Methodist Church in McGregor, IA. To this union 3 children were born. Gary and Juanita lived in Waterloo, IA until 1966 where he worked at John Deere. They then moved to Calmar, IA and he was a delivery driver for UPS in Decorah for 31 years. He retired in October 1997.
He enjoyed camping, traveling, card club and spending time with his family and friends.
Gary died on December 6, 2024, at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita in 1997, his parents Vernon and Virginia Ames, his mother and father-in-law Marlyn and Gerri Edwards, his brothers Merlin Ames and Dan Ames, and his sister Judi Burgess.
He is survived by his daughter, Traci Hauge and her husband Don of Albert Lea, MN, two sons Greg Ames of Calmar IA, and Kevin Ames of Spillville IA, 2 grandchildren Tim Hauge and his wife Bailey and their 2 children Noah and Asher and Kylie Hendrickson and her husband Lucas. He is also survived by his siblings, Rod (Rosemary) Ames, Joan (Bob) Mezera, Cliff (Sandy) Ames, Marty (Jeannine) Ames and sisters-in-law Marilyn Ames and Judy Good, and brother-in-law Vic Burgess.
