THE SILENT REAPER.
MRS. N. RICHERT.
Mrs. Nickolaus Richert died on Friday last, Dec. 4th, after an illness of several years, due to cancer. The day previous she went to the hospital to submit to an operation, but after an incision had been made that permitted a definite decision as to her ailment Dr. Guthrie told her family that he doubted if she could live more than two or three days, even if the operation was performed.
Mary K. Gitz was born Feby. 21, 1842, in Alsace, Germany. She was married to Nickolaus Richert, Jan. 5. 1863. The family became residents of Winneshiek county in 1881, settling in Hesper township on Nov. 1 of that year. There Mr. and Mrs. Richert remained until November, 1904, when they retired and moved to Decorah. Beside her husband Mrs. Richert is survived by four sons and one daughter:--John and Nicholas Richert of Hesper; George and Kate of Chattanooga, Okla., and Philip of Hood River, Oregon. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the First Lutheran church, Rev. I. B. Torrison officiating, and was attended by many old friends who gathered to pay a last tribute to a kind neighbor and friend. Interment was made in Phelps cemetery.

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone in Phelps cemetery shows her name as Maria and her husband’s name as Nicolus.
