OBITUARY.
James Armstrong passed away at the home of his brother, W. T. Armstrong, in this city, on Sunday evening, Oct. 11, at about nine o’clock, cause of death being hardening of the arteries of the head. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock, Rev. McCauley conducting the service. The remains were taken to Burr Oak, Iowa, for interment in the cemetery where his parents and brothers and sisters lie.
James Armstrong was born at Market Hill, Ireland, March 9, 1834. He came to the United States with his parents in 1841, the family living in Walton, N. Y., until 1855, when they came to Burr Oak, Iowa, where he lived until five years ago, when he came to Canistota with his brother, W. T. Armstrong, in fact these two brothers have always been together, James living with W. T. He was a familiar figure on our streets and everybody knew and liked “Uncle James” Armstrong. He has been in poor health the past year, but not confined to his bed until three weeks ago. From the first physicians gave no hope, because the disease with which he was afflicted must necessarily prove fatal, and so everything was done to make his last days as comfortable as possible. His brother, W. T. Armstrong, is the only surviving member of the family of seven children, and his grief is very intense, also that of the nephews and nieces, all of whom have the profound sympathy of the people of this community.
W. J. Armstrong, John Armstrong and W. T. Armstrong accompanied the remains to Burr Oak for interment.—The Canistota Clipper, Thursday, October 15, 1914.
