Celestine A. Griswold, daughter of Lester and Fanny Griswold was born at Beaver, Penn., June 26, 1845. In 1858 she came to Minnesota with her parents where in 1865 she was married to George J. Battey. To this union were born eight children, seven of whom with her husband live to mourn her loss,--Clarence A. Battey of Spring valley, Minn., Mrs. Mabel M. Lynn of Canova, S. D., Mrs. Mary B Snow of Chadron, Neb., Mrs. Hattie Conner of Marshfield, Ore, George N. Battey of Salem, Ore., Mrs. Fanny E. Walker of Grandview, Wash., Mrs. Louis C. Schwartz of Chadron, Neb., one son having died in infancy. Mrs. Battey also leaves three sisters and a brother. In 1873 she gave her heart to Christ and united with the Friends church at Hesper, Iowa, and was a devout Christian all her life. In 1886 she, with her husband, united with the Congregational church, of which he was a minister. She was a sympathetic and helpful co-laborer with her husband during his entire ministerial life. She was also greatly interested in the W. C T U. work. She died in the triumph of the Christian faith at her home, 2495 Laurel avenue, Salem, Ore., age 69 years, two months and 23 days.—The Daily Capital Journal, Salem, Ore.
Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows she died Sept. 19, 1814. She is buried in Lee Mission Cemetery in Salem, OR.
