Brought to Decorah for Burial.
Word came to Decorah friends last Thursday that Robert B. Callwell had died that day at Estherville after an illness of three and one-half years from paralysis. The remains were brought to Decorah and funeral service was held Saturday at Grace Episcopal church, Rev. Wn. McVettie officiating. Interment was made in Phelps cemetery under the auspices of Great Lights Lodge, No. 181, J. W. McCallum, W. M., in charge. The remains were accompanied to Decorah by Mr. and Mrs. Jay Johnston and son Barklie, son-in-law, daughter and grandson of the deceased, Mrs. Emma Haskell and Miss Addelmann, of Estherville.
Mr. Wallwel{sic}l was born June 22, 1845, at Lismore, near Belfast, Ireland. He was educated in Trinity college, Dublin, where he took his degrees as Master of Arts and civil engineer. In just what year he came to America we are not informed, but he took up his residence in Decorah in 1873, later serving for several years as county surveyor. On Oct. 8 1879, he was married to Miss Annie E. Wood, an English lady, who died Jan. 9, 1881, leaving surviving her a daughter, Annie E. Callwell. Mr. Callwell moved to Estherville in 1883 and shortly after was elected county surveyor, a position he held until incapacitated by illness, Beside his service as surveyor in this county Mr. Callwell was for some time engaged with the Chicago, Burlington & Northern railroad. Older residents will remember him and recall his genial ways and straightforward manner of doing business

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in Phelps Cemetery shows he was born in 1847 which does not agree with the above.
