Death of an Old Soldier.
Harvey Johnson, who was a soldier during the civil war, died on Dec. 22, 1913, at St. Petersburg, Fla. He was born in Norway June 13, 1839. In the spring of 1842 his parents emigrated to the United States and settled in Waukesha Co., Wis. In 1852 they removed to Winneshiek Co. and settled in Springfield township. Here the boy grew up and in the spring of 1861 responded to the call for volunteers and enlisted in Co. D, 3rd Iowa. The following winter he fell sick and sent to a hospital at Quincy, Ill., where he remained until spring when, being still unfit for active service, he was discharged and came home. Gradually his health and strength returned and later he enlisted in Co. G, 12th Iowa, and served until the close of the war. After a few years spent in Winneshiek county he went to Douglass Co., Minn., and took a homestead. Later he removed to Arkansas and from there moved to Florida.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in St. Petersburg, FL. His death certificate shows he died Dec. 11, 1913 which does not agree with the above.
