Peter Frana age 57 of rural Decorah, IA passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer.
There will be a private family graveside service at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville, IA with Deacon Dan O'Brien presiding.
A celebration of life for Peter will be held from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at the St. Wenceslaus School in Spillville.
Peter was born in Decorah on the 3rd of October 1966 to Emil and Frances (Anderson) Frana. He grew up on the family farm in Madison township of Winneshiek County and attended South Winneshiek schools where he graduated in 1985. He was a lifelong member of the St. Wenceslaus parish in Spillville, Ia. After graduating he joined his parents in raising crops and livestock on the family farm. Pete and his dad did many mechanical repairs for friends and neighbors. They also restored his dad’s 1947 Willy’s Jeep and Ford 8n tractor. In the game of life, Pete was dealt a bad card and was born with a rare eye disease named “retinitis pigmentosis” which gradually stole his eyesight away in his late 20’s. That did not stop him though. He knew the homeplace by heart and continued stacking hay bales and caring for cattle. He saved many a struggling calf and brought them back to health. Through the years there was always a faithful dog by his side. His last one, Bud, has been with Pete for 15 years and is now sadly missing his master. Peter was also blessed with a great group of friends and classmates who made sure to include him in their outings and “boars nest” meetings.
Pete was a kind, gentle soul and will be dearly missed. Left to honor his memory are sisters, Louann (Mark) Ptacek, of Protivin and Ruth (John) Huinker of Decorah. Nephews, Charles Halvorson (children: Charlie, Johannah and Isaiah), Lee (Kristy) Huinker (sons: Jackson and Mason), Solomon (special friend Tiarra and children, Olivia and Gabriel), Alex Halvorson, Andrew (Andrea) Halvorson (son: Adam) and Steven (Courtney) Huinker (children: Pearl and Ames). Nieces, Louann (Joe) Rilling (children: Emma and Gunnar), Jackie (Mike) Henning (daughters: Mara, Sloane, Evie, Shea and Quinn), Danielle (Noah) Balik (children: Tate, Aunika and Lucy), Darci (Jamie) Lenehan (daughters: Morgan and Harper), Dana (Tom) Williams (children: Lydia and Mitch) and Erica (Brandon) Gardner (children: Robbie and Kate).
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Frances Frana; paternal grandparents, William and Mary Frana; maternal grandparents Gilbert and Luella Anderson; infant brother, Roger; and brother-in-law, Charles Halvorson.
Pete’s family extends a special thank-you to the staff at Ossian Senior Hospice, Winn-Med Hospice, Gundersen Clinic, and Winn-Med Hospital for the daily devotion to his care, and the love and support provided.
