On Wednesday forenoon our community was again saddened by a telegram announcing the death of Mrs. Adah Stephenson at St. Mary’s hospital at Rochester. Four weeks ago to-day Mrs. Stephenson came from her home in Spencer to visit her son Elmo and other relatives. She had not been feeling well all summer but it was not thought to be anything of serious nature. She was feeling so badly she went to Cresco to consult Dr. Kessel. Upon examination Dr. Kessel found a very bad cancer in the intestines and advised her to go to Rochester to consult Dr. Mayo at once. Her son George was telegraphed for and upon his arrival they immediately went to Rochester accompanied by her sister Mrs. W. C. Fifield. Upon examination the doctors told her she stood a chance for help by an operation. She submitted to an operation on Thursday, Aug. 20. She came through nicely and for the first few days seemed to be gaining but on Monday her kidneys seemed to be affected. All that could be done was done but of no avail and on Tuesday night at eleven o’clock she quietly passed away. Mrs. Stephenson was not a stranger among us having lived in Kendallville and near here for years before going to Spencer. She has relatives and many friends all through our community who loved her and will sadly miss her. The relatives have the sincere sympathy of all of our people.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows she was born Aug. 18, 1851 and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, IA; however, it shows she died in 1914 which is incorrect since this was published in 1913.
