Death of Laura Tavener.
On Friday last, at about the noon hour, Miss Laura Tavener, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John I Tavener, died at the family home in the fifth ward, death being due to appendicitis. Miss Tavener was taken ill Monday, but at the time did not think her ailment was of a serious nature. Tuesday she was much worse and her condition became so alarming that Dr. Thomas, who had been called to attend her, called Dr. M. D. Jewell in consultation. It was evident that peritonitis had set in, and on Thursday Dr. Guthrie of Dubuque was summoned. He arrived early Friday morning, and after a thorough examination decided that an operation would be the only hope of saving her life and even that was doubtful. Two incisions were made which confirmed his belief that the disease had progressed too far.
Miss Tavener was born November 26, 1875, and has always lived in the home where she died. During the past few years she has been the one member of the family to whom all the others appealed for assistance and advice, hence her death leaves a vacancy that will be keenly felt. She was a young woman of quiet though sunny disposition, and was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. The funeral was held Monday afternoon, Rev. M. Willett officiating, and interment was made in Phelps cemetery.
