MRS. A. F. ANUNDSEN DEAD.
Passed Away Last Thursday at Her Home at Detroit, Minn.
Word came to Decorah relatives and friends last Thursday that Mrs. Mabel Gardner Anundsen died that day at her home in Detroit, Minnesota, death being due to cancer. Few if any even of her most intimate associated knew of her illness, therefore the news of her death was a shock to a large circle of acquaintances who had known her from childhood and held for her the highest esteem.
Mabel Gardner was born August 24, 1866 at Conover. Two years later the family moved to Decorah and here she grew to womanhood. She graduated from Decorah high school in 1884, subsequently teaching for several terms, attending the Art Institute in Chicago one year, and assisted her father in the First National Bank. She was married January 1, 1891, to Arthur F. Anundsen and moved to Canton, Ohio, where they resided about eighteen months, then returning to Decorah. This was their home until seven years ago when they moved to Detroit. Six children were born to them, five daughters and one son. They are Milla (Mrs. Geo. Peoples), Martha, George, Esther and Erling. Mr. Anundsen died two and one-half years ago.
Mrs. Anundsen was a woman of unusual attainments. She possessed qualities that would have made her a business woman of rare judgment; she proved her capacity as a teacher; in literary accomplishment she disclosed attributes that would have brought her distinction had she chosen to develop them; but better than all these she was a devoted mother and staunch friend.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the home of her mother, Mrs. George Q. Gardner, Rev. M. Willett officiating, and interment was made in Phelps cemetery.
