Saturday, December 5th, 1914, occurred the death of Ignatz Benda, perhaps the oldest pioneer settler of Spillville. He died at the home of his son, Louis J. Benda in town, where he had lived the greater part of his adult life. He was almost 89 years of age, and his death was caused chiefly by old age. The deceased was born in Bohemia, Europe, February 17th, 1825 and came to America in 1853, settling for a year at Cleveland, Ohio. From there he came the next year to Winneshiek county, Iowa, and soon after he settled on the farm, which was his home till death. He was married in Bohemia in 1850. Of this union, twelve children were born, three of whom are dead, leaving nine to mourn their aged father's death, viz. Thomas Benda of Spirit Lake, Ia.; Joseph of St. Paul, Minn.; John of Grand Forks, Minn.; James and Louis of Spillville; Barbara of Spillville; Frances, Mrs. Math Bena of Spillville; Anna, Mrs. Valek of Duncan, Ia.; and Josephine, Mrs. Thos Jira of Protivin, Ia.
Mrs Benda the wife of the deceased died 27 years ago. The funeral took place December 7th, 1914 from St. Wenceslaus church here. Rev. J.P.Broz officiating. The following carried the remains to their last resting place: Frank Ondrashek, Jos Mikesh, Wenzel Zak, Simon Michal, Chas. Hrushka and John Fisher.
It is the lot of but few mortals to live on this earth as many days as the aged deceased, Ignatz Benda, and the writer joins with the bereaved relatives in the wish, that the trials of a long life may bring to him in eternity rest and peace, so well earned.
