OBITUARY.
DANIEL P. HAWES.
At two o’clock Tuesday, April 15th, D. P. Hawes passed away at his home on Winnebago street, death being due to Bright’s disease, from which he was a sufferer for the greater part of eight years. During the past six months of his illness he was confined to his bed.
Daniel P. Hawes was born in Sherman, Conn., on October 21, 1837, where he grew to young manhood. In 1856 he came to Iowa and for four eyars lived at Bradford, Chickasaw Co. In 1860 he moved to this county and here he has since resided. On September 3, 1862, he was married to Helen Pagin at Frankville and they began home making on a farm on Washington Prairie. During the latter part of their farm life Mr. Hawes engaged in the windmill business and he was so successful that he eventually became traveling salesman for the Halladay Co. and for thirty years he continued to represent them. In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Hawes retired from the farm and came to Decorah to make their home. One son was born to them, Joel D. Hawes of Carter, Mont. For several weeks he has been here assisting his mother in the care of his father.
Mr. Hawes was successful both as a farmer and as a salesman, and leaves to his wife and son a comfortable property. To many he presented a gruff exterior but among his intimate acquaintances this was known to be covering for a kind heart and a sincerity of friendship that was not easily shaken. He was devoted to his home and family and his thoughts were always for their welfare. While he did not take a prominent part in political or other activities, nevertheless he was greatly interested in all matters that pertained to the welfare of the state and this community and enjoyed the respect that is due to a good citizen.
The funeral will be held at the home this afternoon at two o’clock and interment will be made in Phelps cemetery. Rev. H. H. Green will officiate.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows his date of birth as July 31, 1837 which does not agree with the above. The age shown on the gravestone agrees with the July date.
