On Wednesday morning, April 2d, after a week’s painful illness, Halvor Nelson passed away here at his home in the eventide of life, aged 77 years, 9 months and 22 days. He was taken ill the Wednesday previous, which is thought was caused by some bodily strain received while about some work, resulting in an affliction similar to rupture. Although he had suffered agonies of pain he was the day preceding and until death composed and calm. Mr. Nelson was born in Vang, Valders, Norway, on June 9th, 1835, and came here in Springfield township in 1856 at the age of 21 years, where he resided until death. On July 26th, 1862, he was married to Bergit Knonaas and to this union were born to them fourteen children, Mary (deceased), Nels, Holver, Annie, Gustav, (deceased), Gunhild, (deceased), Christian, Martin, Gunhild, Christine, Oliver, Hildah, Clara and Andrew. As husband and father he was ever faithful and affectionate, an honest and upright man,--for he that walketh uprightly walketh surely,--a companionable neighbor whose services were always cheerfully extended. He was an eager observer of religion and a diligent member of the church by which at the parting hour the path illumined. Funeral services occurred on Saturday afternoon by Rev. P. Koren, with interment at the Washington Prairie cemetery laid there by his six sons, Martin, Christian, Holver, Nels, Oliver and Andrew who were pall bearers. Many and exquisite were the flowers which adorned his bed, which alas could but signify but not reach. Deceased leaves to mourn his demise, wife and eleven children, all of whom were present and several grandchildren with whom he was distinctly a favorite grandfather.
“We see but dimly through the mists and vapors
Amid these earthly damps.
What seem to us but sad funeral tapers
May be heaven’s distant lamps”
In this their great affliction the bereaved ones have the sincere sympathy od the entire community May he rest in peace.

Transcriber's Note: Find a Grave shows his wife's name was spelled Bergit.
