OBITUARY.
CAPT. CHAS W. BURDICK
Capt. Chas. W. Burdick died at his home in West Decorah on Friday, March 7th, 1913, of a complication of diseases, aged 74 years, six months and twelve days.
Charles Winslow Burdick was born August 23rd, 1838, at Evansburg, Pa. He came west with his parents and family in 1853, arriving in Winneshiek county May 23rd, and the family settled on the northwest quarter of Section 13 in what is now known as Decorah township. Here he lived the quiet life of a farmer boy until the war broke out and was one of the first to respond to his country’s call. He enlisted in Company D of the Third Iowa infantry and left Decorah on May 29th, 1861, as the third sergeant of the company. He was one of six brothers who served in the army, all of them serving with distinction and credit. From third sergeant he was advanced to orderly and afterwards to second lieutenant, then first lieutenant, and came back at the close of the war acting captain of the company. During the war he was in every engagement that the regiment was in and during the whole time never was reported as sick and unable to attend to his duties, a remarkable record. While he was actively engaged in every engagement he went through unscathed and was not wounded. He came back from the struggle the idol of the men who served under him. After the war he settled down in Decorah and for some years was engaged in the land and abstract business. In January, 1884, he, together with a number of others, organized the Citizens Savings Bank and became the president. This position he held until August, 1903, when he sold his holdings to E. J. Curtin and voluntarily retired from banking business. Since then he has led a quiet life seeking recreation with his rod and gun until of late years. On February 20, 1867, he was married to Miss Violetta McMurtrie and to them two children were born, Allie and May. His wife died several years after and on November 21, 1894, he married Mrs. Ida Stone. In the year 1899 he was married to Miss Noble Dixson. Of the original Burdick family who came to Decorah half a century ago only one survived, his sister Mrs. R. C. Pike. The funeral was held Monday, the 19th, from the house Mr. Burdick was a man of quiet tastes never seeking publicity, but he was strong in his friendships and he had the faculty of securing strong friendships. He was friendly to all mankind and everyone was friendly to Charley.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon, Rev. H. H. Green officiating, with interment in Phelps cemetery.
