Brought Home for Burial.
On Saturday the remains of Mrs. Charles Hegner were brought from Chicago for burial beside those of other members of the family in Phelps cemetery. They were accompanied by her son, Rev. H. F. Hegner and daughters Miss Ida Hegner and Mrs. Wilma Walter and were taken directly to the cemetery where Dr. Willett performed the last rites.
Mrs. Hegner’s maiden name was Wilhelmina Busch. She was born on January 31, 1840, at Pripsleben, Germany, and came to America at an early day with her parents, settling at Whitewater, Wis. There in 1857 she ws married to Charles Hegner. Nine children were born to them, all of whom except their son Ernest, who died several years ago, survive. They are William, residing in Los Angeles, Carl at Memphis, Tenn., Herman, Miss Ida and Mrs. Wilma Walter, of Chicago, Mrs. J. W. Wallace, Miami, Fla., Mrs. J. R. McNally, Elon College, N. C., and Robert W., Ann Arbor, Mich. She is also survived by her mother who is still living at Whitewater, Wis., at the advanced age of ninety-six years.
Just how many years the family home was in Decorah we do not recall, but from our earliest recollection until a few years ago when she went to Chicago to reside with her children, Mrs. Hegner was a near neighbor, and we remember her as sincerely devoted to her husband and children. The latter she taught the homely habits of industry and watched over them and was jealous for their well being and success, and in her old age they returned to her loving care. While never active in religious work she was a life-long member of the German Lutheran church and during the year of suffering that preceded her death she waited with Christian fortitude the final summons. Her death was due to heart disease, and came on March 27th. The funeral service was held on Friday, the 29th, at the home at 11938 Yale avenue, Chicago, Rev. A. C. Moses officiating, the children present being Rev. H. F Hegner, Dr. R. W. Hegner, Miss Ida, Mrs. Walter and Mrs. Wallace.
