Helen Lucille Knutson, 97, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 21st at Barthell Eastern Star nursing home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 28, 2023, at Madison Lutheran Church - 2658 Madison Rd, Decorah, IA 52101. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Madison Lutheran Church.
Helen was born on December 27th, 1925, the daughter of Henry Arthur and Olga Louise Helgeson. She was baptized January 10th, 1926, and confirmed June 18th, 1939, at Big Canoe Lutheran Church. She attended Highland #5 Winneshiek County and Thomas Robert High School in Decorah, graduating in 1943. Helen was married to Clair H. Knutson on September 3rd, 1946.
Helen was a hard worker throughout her lifetime starting with working for her room and board during high school, then for Collins Radio Company in Cedar Rapids – as a real life “Rosie the Riveter”, and finally on the family farm until retirement. She was dedicated to the church serving on countless committees, was an amazing cook who never let a person leave the table hungry and had a quick wit with a huge heart. She carried herself with dignity, strength, and full of love for those who went before her. She will be missed dearly.
Helen is survived by her granddaughter Lee (Ryan) Pietzsch and great-granddaughter Ellery Pietzsch of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and many loving nieces and nephews including Lester (Reyne) Knutson of Chatfield, Minnesota, Tim (Tammy) Knutson of Ridgeway, Sherie (Jim) Akre of Winona, Minnesota, Kevin (Katherine) Knutson of Swisher, Kari (Kent) Paulsen and Katherine (Chuck) Long of Urbandale, Michael (Debbie) Jewell of Washington, Kathy (Tim) Schoespke of Washburn, Steve (Dede) Jewell, Jim (Julie) Jewell, and Karen (Dave) Broell of Waterloo, Tim Helgeson of Evansdale, Cindy (Mark) Klenzman of Waterloo, Bruce (Cindi) Helgeson of Dysart, Susan (Kirk) Plagge of Boise, Idaho, Lori Ingram of Evansdale, and Dennis Helgeson of Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clair, son Thomas Knutson, daughter Corrine Knutson, siblings Charles Helgeson, Nellie (John) Streit, William (Marian) Helgeson, Nathan Helgeson, and Ethel (Clarence) Jewell, and parents Henry and Olga Helgeson.
