Lucille Kruse, a loving wife, devoted mother, and cherished friend, left this world on August 4, 2023, surrounded by her children. It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to a remarkable woman whose warmth, generosity, and unwavering love touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Lucille (Hackman) Kruse was born on August 17, 1929, to Edward and Anna (Schmitt) Hackman in Festina Iowa. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School and two years at St. Lucas Catholic High School. In 1950 she was united in marriage to Arthur Kruse and blessed with eight children. They made their home on a farm just north of Calmar. Together they ran a successful farming business until Art passed away in 1995.

In 1984, Lucille and Art decided to add to their family business and opened The Calmar Guesthouse, one of the first Bed and Breakfasts in the area. Lucille had an exceptional gift for hospitality, and her passion for hosting family and friends at the Calmar Guesthouse was unparalleled. Her culinary prowess seemed effortless, as she delighted guests with compelling conversation and delicious breakfasts (especially her quiche and fresh cinnamon rolls). She was an active member of Northeast Iowa Tourism, the Recreational Trail Development Committee, and Iowa Bed & Breakfast Innkeepers Association where she later inspected and certified other Iowa B&Bs.

If that wasn't enough to do, Lucille was an active member of St. Aloysius Church and served on Parish Council, Catholic School Board, American Council of Catholic Women, Church Choir, Rosary Society, Archdiocesan Council, Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and trained to serve her parish as a Liturgical Minister, to help offer services when the priest wasn't available. She was one of two founding leaders of the Calmar 4-H Club.

Her work earned her many awards through the years, including the Governor's Volunteer Award in 2001 and 2011.

Her greatest legacy and joy were her eight children, 27 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. Lucille enjoyed music and was gifted at playing the piano by ear. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, dancing, golfing, games, and cards. Lucille's love for her family was immeasurable, and her presence enriched the lives of her children and grandchildren as a shining example of a child of God, wife, mother, and entrepreneur. She is survived by her children: Georgia (Jim) Tierney, Mark (Marcia) Kruse, Rosemary (Arthur) Behrens, Duane (Sharon Sandberg) Kruse, Diane (Carl) Kruse, Marcia (Bruce) Gullickson, Karen (Steven) Kovarik, Barbara (Timothy) Read. Grandchildren: Patrick (Sarah) Tierney, and Jaime (Justin) Wilhelm, Chiara (Ryan) White, Anna (Alton) Dunnigan, Bryant (Aya) Kruse, Matthew (Kendra) Kruse and Marie (Carl) Wahlstrom, Michelle (Joe) Doerer, Katie (Gavin) Yager and Chris Behrens, Anita (Jon) Hoddinott, Benjamin Kruse and Adam (Ashley) Kruse, Curt (Gail) Kruse, Kevin Kruse, Kent Kruse and Bridget (Brady) Bedeker, Nick (Katie) Gullickson, Megan (Matt) Treacy, Tally (Colton) Rodgers and Annie (Blake) Tish, Jeremiah (Jocelyn) Kovarik and Zachariah (Brittney) Kovarik, Alexander, Lucy, Albany and Edison Read. Siblings Norbert Hackman and Phyllis Einwalter. Sister-in-law: Betty Hackman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Kruse. Parents Edward and Anna (Schmitt) Hackman. Father and mother-in-law, George and Kathryn Kruse. Lucille will always be remembered for her unwavering faith. She lived her life to honor God and shared her devotion to Him with those she met. Her family is left with beautiful memories of praying together, working together and oftentimes, both at the same time. The memories of her love, laughter, quick wit, and wisdom continue to shape lives and will forever be treasured.
