Later in the afternoon a telegram was received announcing that death occurred in the morning. Neither telegram gave the cause. The Elks took the matter in charge and shipped the remains to Decorah.

Crushed to Death.
It was not known when we announced last week the death of Peter Roney how the calamity occurred. Subsequent information is that while attending to his duties as yardmaster in the yards of the Great Northern Railroad at Great Falls, Mont., he got between two freight cars and they in coming together caught him and crushed his hips. He was at once removed to Columbia hospital but death ensured in about twelve hours. While he was in the humbler walks of life he was well liked and respected by all with whom he came in contact. The remains arrived Sunday night accompanied by a Brother Elk. The funeral was held from St. Benedict’s church Monday morning.
Peter J. Roney was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Rooney. He was born in Decorah twenty-six years ago and spent all of his boyhood here. About three years ago he went to St. Paul and secured work with the Great Northern railroad. Being somewhat familiar with railroad work, intelligent and strictly temperate his rise was one of the most rapid in railroad circles. In two years he was a conductor and recently was given the responsible position of yardmaster at Great Falls, one of the most important points on that great system. As master h was not obliged to do the work that caused his death but the necessity arose and he stepped into the breach to help out the boys.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows the name spelled Rooney.
