THE SILENT REAPER.
John S. Alstad, whose death at an early hour last Thursday morning was announced in the REPUBLICAN, last week was born April 12th, 1871, in Throndhjem, Norway, and came to America with his parents when eleven years old. When eighteen years of age he entered the employ of Ben Bear as clerk, and continued in that capacity up to the time of his death. He was good natured and enjoyed a popularity and friendship among a wide circle of acquaintances.
The deceased for many years was an active and efficient member of the Decorah fire department, serving as foreman of the Hook & Ladder company and as chief. He was also a member of Det Norske Selskab and Luren, being president of that organization when he died. His illness, which dated only from the Sunday evening prior to his death, came on suddenly and was critical from the first.
Mr. Alstad was married to Louisa Severson on Dec. 28, 1893, and she, with their only daughter Lottie, his parents, six brothers and one sister, survive. These were joined in morurning(sic) by a large company of friends who gathered Saturday afternoon at the United Lutheran church, where the funeral service was held. Interment was made in the Norwegian cemetery.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born April 12, 1871 and died May 26, 1910. He is buried in the Lutheran Decorah Cemetery.
