Frankville people were greatly shocked and grieved Tuesday morning when the news flashed around town that one of our old and highly respected citizens, Jas. Ryan was dead. Although his health had been poor for some time he was about his usual duties on the farm and the day before was disking. In the evening he did not feel well but it was not thought to be anything serious. About four o’clock he awoke and complained of a pain around his heart. Mrs. Ryan bathed the place with some liniment, which seemed to relieve him and he turned on his side. She spoke to him but he did not answer and becoming alarmed she aroused the household, only to find that he had passed quietly away. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church at West Ridge Friday morning, with interment at the same place. Further particulars will be given next week.

James Ryan was born in Ireland, on March 18, 1839. Came with his parents to America when nine years of age and settled at Lyons, Iowa, where they lived five years, and then moved to West Ridge. In 1865 he went to California, where he remained two years. He was married June 7th, 1867, to Miss Johanna Gallagher. Thirty-four years ago last March he with his family came to Frankville, where he has since lived on the farm where he died early in the morning of May 3 of apoplexy at the age of 71 years, 1 month and 16 days. His parents were poor, so early in life he was thrown on his own resources but with hard work and perseverance he had accumulated a large amount of property. He leaves a true and faithful wife and ten children to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. One son Edward, who had grown to manhood, died Oct. 4, 1902. The remaining children are James Ryan, Waukon, Ellen, Mrs. Dan Drew, Cresco, Kate, Mrs. Will Drew, Waukon, Hannah, now Sister Miriam of New Haven, Mary, Sarah, Maggie, Elizabeth, Joe and Tom at home on the farm. The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved ones in their sad affliction.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows died May 3, 1910. He is buried in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waukon, IA. Also Mrs. Ryan’s father was only 100 years old at this time - he did live until 1919.
