OBITUARY.
After an illness of but a few days Mrs. R. F. Gibson passed away Friday evening last about 6:30 o’clock, at her home on Broadway. On the Saturday afternoon previous, while waiting on Mr. Gibson who returned home suffering from the grip, she became exhausted and sank to the floor where she was found by Mrs. Fred Suhring who happened in opportunely and gave such assistance as was possible. For a long time Mrs. Gibson has been gradually failing and her strength was not sufficient to withstand an attack of pneumonia which followed the collapse of the Saturday previous.
Within the past two years Mrs. Gibson has suffered seriously from illness on several occasions, and she has been urged to have some one to help her, but she seemed to feel that she could not relinquish the devotion to her home and her husband that had been so much a part of her daily life during all the long years they had been permitted to remain together. Word of her mother’s serious illness brought Mrs. Kuby from St. Paul at once and Mrs. Gibson’s last hours were made happier by her daughter’s loving care.
Mrs. Gibson’s maiden name was Sarah Ellen Trimble. She was born Sept.14, 1834, in Carlisle, Pa., and was married on May 5, 1851, to Robert F. Gibson of Bedford, Pa. Previous to coming to Decorah in 1858 they lived for seven years at Akron, Ohio. For more than fifty-one years Decorah has been their home and they have participated in both the material and spiritual upbuilding of our city. Mrs. Gibson was not of those who assert themselves publicly but in her home she reigned with love and devotion and it may be truly said “Her children rise up and call her blessed, her husband also, and he praiseth her”
Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gibson—Harold, Frederick, Ellen and May . Harold and May (Mrs. A. A. Kuby of St. Paul) survive and one of the happy memories to them is the family reunion that occurred on last Thanksgiving day in St. Paul, when they were together in life, with their parents for the last time.
In her young womanhood Mrs. Gibson joined the presbyterian church, but on coming to Decorah she joined the Congregational church and in this, as in her relation to her family and her friends, she was devoted and true, and regular in attendance upon its services when health permitted.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon at two o’clock at the house, Rev. Mahlon Willett officiating, and the remains were placed in the vault at Phelps cemetery. Beside her husband, son and daughter there were present her son-in-law and grandson, A. A. Kuby and Frederick Kuby of St. Paul, and her nephew S. Perry Barr of Des Moines.
