THE SILENT REAPER.
OLE T. HAMRE.
After an illness of about two months Ole T. Hamre passed away Monday evening at his home on Main street, aged 71 years, 2 months and 23 days.
Mr. Hamre was a native of Norway, where he was born on Oct. 24th, 1837. In 1857 he came to America and to Winneshiek county, engaging in farming until 1861 when he moved to Decorah and worked at his trade—tailoring—which he had learned prior to coming to this country. From 1867 to 1872 he again engaged in farming, afterward buying the St. Cloud hotel which he continued to conduct until July, 1886, when he sold it to Mrs. E. A. Duffy. During the time he was in the hotel he was also dealing in farm machinery, in partnership with Henry Paine. After retiring from the hotel he became associated with Henry Reeves in the live stock business and the later years of his life were devoted almost exclusively to that occupation.
Mr. Hamre served as alderman from the third ward for several years, and took an active interest in the affairs of Det Norske Selskab, of which he was one of the oldest members. He was cordial in his relations with his fellowmen and although he had no children of his own he evinced a strong affection for them and as he passed along the street was alwasy{sic} ready to engage in frolic with them. In fact his disposition was one of exceptional good cheer to all with whom he came in contact.
On Dec. 26, 1857, he was married to Miss Isabel Christianson, who survives him. Two years ago they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and during the more than half century of their life together she has been his faithful helpmeet. The sympathy of many friends will go out to her in her bereavement.
The cause of Mr. Hamre’s death was gangrene of the lung, resulting from pneumonia following an operation to which he submitted in November in Minneapolis.
The funeral will be held to-day, at 2:00 o’clock at the home and at 2:30 at the First Lutheran church, Rev. I. B. Torrison officiating, with interment in the Norwegian cemetery.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he died Jan. 17. 1910 and is buried in the Lutheran Decorah Cemetery.
