John H. Sphar was born in Dauphin county, Penn., Oct. 4, 1836, and died very suddenly at his home near Castalia, Ia., Dec. 29, 1909, and was buried on New Year’s day in Pleasant View cemetery. His early life was spent in canal boating in the Atlantic coast states. After the War of the Rebellion began, he enlisted in the U. S. army as a marine, and served four years. About the year 1868 he came to Stephenson Co., Ill., and was there united in marriage to Miss Sarah McHoes, Dec. 29, 1870. To this union were born four children, Mrs. W. E. Bollman, of Grand Forks, N. D., Wm. Burdell Sphar, Mrs. S. A. Green and Mrs. B. F. Kneeskern of Castalia. In January 1871, he with his wife moved to Fayette county, Iowa, where they lived three years, then moved to their present home. In 1871 he embraced religion and joined the U. B. church, and remained a faithful member until death. He was appointed as one of the trustees of the church and served until two years ago, when he resigned. He also held the offices of class leader and steward for a number of years. He was a regular attendant at all church services as long as his health permitted. Those from a distance to attend Mr. Sphar’s funeral were Ulysses McHoes and Geo. McHoes, Davis, Ill., Mrs. W. E. Bollman, Grand Forks, N. D., Ed. Wilber and Mrs. B. F. Downs of Waukon, Iowa.
