EDWIN R. SCOTT DEAD.
Pioneer Settler of Madison Township Passed Away Monday Night After a Brief Illness.
Edward R. Scott died Monday evening at 9:30 o’clock at his room at the Stiles hotel after an illness of but a few days due to the infirmities of old age.
On Sept. 13th last Mr. Scott entered his eighty-eighty year. He was born in Vermont in 1822, and in 1853 he was married to Maney{?} Lewis in New York state. They came to Winneshiek county on June 20th, 1854, and settled on the northeast quarter of Section 16, Madison township. Until five years ago they continued to make their home in Madison township. On the death of Mrs. Scott he came to Decorah to reside and most of the time since has made his home here.
The deceased is survived by six children—Edward, Samuel and Mrs. George Shepard of Oregon City, Oregon, Mrs. John E. Brown of Hansboro, N. D., Mrs. J. Brydon of Hilton, Manitoba, and Miss Minerva Scott of Chicago. All but Edward and Mrs. Shepard will be here at the funeral, which occurs Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p. m. at the Stiles hotel, with interment in Phelps cemetery. Messrs. and Mds. Brown and Bryden are now here, Minerva comes to-day and Samuel to-morrow.
During his life Mr. Scott was a man of industry and frugal habits, acquiring a competence and being known as an intelligent well-informed man.

Transcriber’s Note: His first name is shown two different ways. No gravestone photo is available to verify the correct name; however, Find a Grave shows it as Edward. Phelps Cemetery only shows E. R. Scott. Find a Grave also shows his year of birth as 1821, and shows his wife’s name as Mary.
