Roger Benda, age 85 of Fort Atkinson, IA, died Sunday, February 19, 2023 at his home.

There will not be a formal visitation or church service.

Roger Ronald Benda, the son of Elmer and Luella (Herold) Benda, was born February 6, 1938, on the home farm.

He was united in marriage to Mary Klimesh on September 20, 1962 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes, IA. They were married 56 years until Mary’s death in 2018. They were blessed with 5 wonderful daughters: Joanie, Janice, Julie, Joyce, and Jennifer. Roger and Mary worked side by side on their dairy farm outside of Spillville. Roger loved farming, fishing, hunting and was especially proud of cultivating for and harvesting his hay.

Roger is remembered and survived by his daughters: Joan Benda of Luana, Janice (Dan) Pape of Luana, Julie (Randy) Halweg of Fort Atkinson, Joyce Benda of Cresco, and Jennifer (Billy) Frey of Fort Atkinson. Roger had grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and step great-grandchildren that he loved dearly. Grandchildren: Sheila Anderson of Luana, Zachary (Aubreanna McQuade) of Decorah, and Desiree Benda of Cresco. Step-grandchildren Drew (Taylor) Pape of Clear Lake, Ren Pape (girlfriend Alison Hallberg) of Monona, Jesse (Alyssa) Halweg of Decorah, and Jenna (Scott) Cole of Ryan, IA. Great-grandchildren Grayson, Vaida, and Brantley Benda of Cresco. Step great-grandchildren Dutton and Essten Pape of Clear Lake, Ansley, Brexton, and Coleston Pape of Clear Lake, and Denver Pape of Monona, Brekin, Brinley, and Braea Halweg of Decorah. Roger is also survived by one sister Leanne (Dale) Goettelman of Decorah. Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Tom (Beth) Klimesh of Spillville, Peter (Theresa) Klimesh of Calmar, Emily Kalwarowsky of Canada, Daniel (Diane) Klimesh of Ridgeway, and Cathy (John) Darrah of Dubuque. And many nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, and cousins.

Roger is preceded in death by his father and mother; Elmer and Luella (Herold) Benda, his father and mother-in-law Otto and Irene (Prohaski) Klimesh, grandson; Shawn Anderson. A niece and many uncles, aunts, and cousins.
