I stated last week that Mrs. McLaughlin passed into her hundredth year on June 2nd. Some of the family were quite sure she was born in 1809 instead of 1810, and for proof, they sent to the old home in Pennsylvania for the family record, which came after her burial. Rachel McGeary was born June 2d, 1809, in Westmoreland Co., Penn., and died August 12, 1909, making her a real centenarian. She became the bride of Joseph McLaughlin in 1831. They came to Illinois in 1855 and to Iowa in 1856, and settled in Burr Oak township, where the balance of a long, useful life has been spent. Four sons and four daughters were given them, five of whom survive. The three daughters were permitted to be present during her last days, Mrs. Townsend of Burr Oak, Mrs. Ervin of Pierre, S. D., and Mrs. Fessenden of Cresco. The sons, Wm. and Samuel, live in lower California. Mr. McLaughlin died in 1897 and this aged couple sleep side by side in Burr Oak cemetery both loved and respected by a host of friends.
