Martin, Allen, Well Known Springfield Township Man, Hangs Himself Tuesday.
Tuesday afternoon Sheriff Qualley was called to the old Allen homestead in Springfield township by the news that Martin Allen had hung himself. Justice Barthell was called upon to act as coroner and when the officers arrived at the scene of the tragedy they found Allen had erected a ladder against a hay stack, attached a rope to one of the rounds, made a single tie of the other end around his neck and thrown his weight upon the rope. He was resting nearly on the ground, one leg curled up under him and the other extending in front.
For some time Mr. Allen has not been sound mentally, and it is supposed that his rash act was due to that condition. His family and person relations were of the most pleasant and financially there were ample reasons for making life worth living.
The deceased was about forty-two years of age, a bachelor, and a member of one of the oldest families in Springfield. He was respected by all who knew him and his brothers and ssiters have the sympathy of a most of friends in their affliction.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born in 1861 and is buried in the Union Prairie Cemetery.
