Clara Georgine “Penny” Tweet, age 91, of Decorah, IA died on Saturday, January 14th, 2023, at the Wellington Place in Decorah, IA.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, January 17th, 2023 at the Helms Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue in Decorah. A private family graveside service will be held the same day at Big Canoe Cemetery. The Helms Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Clara Georgine (Penny) Tweet, born in Ellenburg, WA, middle child of five girls. Her father took her to her first opera at 13, which instilled a life-long love of music in her. She met Durwin Willard (Bud) Tweet while working as a waitress in Cle Elum, WA and eloped with him despite his habit of poking his fingers in the cherry pies at the Sunset Cafe.

She received the moniker Penny because she’d get as dark as a copper Penny when sunbathing, which she loved to do.

She arrived in Decorah when Bud returned to his hometown where she proudly and consistently displayed her Scottish heritage to a town full of Norwegians. She loved Decorah and said she never wanted to leave.

She loved to cook, bake, and serve which culminated in over a decade of service at the Hotel Winneshiek. She loved children and cared for a number of children in the area.

Her devoted husband passed away in 1999. She is survived by three children, Karen (Bob), Florida; Diane, Indiana; and David, Ohio. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Gabe, Will, and Zoë (Nathan); and two great grand children; Sadie and Thaddeus.
