Hazel Catherine (Rosendahl) Gullickson was born on December 9, 1931, in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Gilbert and Pearl (Brynsaas) Rosendahl. She was baptized and confirmed at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church near Decorah. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1949. On February 12, 1950, she was united in marriage to Howard Lester Gullickson at Burr Oak Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with four children: Darryl, Dennis, Duane and Connie.

Howard and Hazel farmed near Burr Oak. Hazel helped with all kinds of farm work and kept the farm neat and tidy. Due to Howard’s love for the Cubs and Hawkeyes, Hazel became a fan as well. Hazel was the principal’s secretary for many years at North Winneshiek Community School in rural Decorah. Her faith was also important to her, and Burr Oak Lutheran Church remained near and dear to her heart. She was active through WELCA, circle, church cleaning, “do-day,” serving at funerals and the annual bazaar and meatball supper. She enjoyed playing Euchre, going to card club, sewing and quilting. Above all else, her family was most precious to her.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard, on September 19, 2008; son, Dennis, in 1954 at the age of 3˝ months; great granddaughter, Brooke Daugs; two brothers, Charles Rosendahl and Merlin Rosendahl; sisters-in-law, Martha Rosendahl, Elsie Rosendahl, Sadie Heins, Mabel Gullickson, Dorothy Arness; brothers-in-law, Glen Gullickson, Walter Gullickson, Norman Gullickson, Elmer Heins, and Gordon Arness; and her mother and father-in-law, Adolph and Ida Gullickson.

Survivors include her sons, Darryl (Cheri) Gullickson of The Villages, Florida; Duane (Stacey) Gullickson of Medina, MN; her daughter, Connie (Steve) Schmitt of Hawkeye, IA; nine grandchildren: Amber (Keith) Luckeroth, Kyia (Doug) Haebig, Alyssa (Matt) Daugs, Lindsey (Brendan) Reilly, Hannah (Johnny) Gibas, Emily (David) Counts, Amy (Zach) D’Amico, Lucas (Shanna Wettleson) Schmitt, and Molly (Sam) Ihde; 16 grandchildren; Spencer, Tyler and Isabel Luckeroth; Sylvia and Clark Haebig; Elijah and Ellie Daugs; Liam and Delaney Reilly; Wyatt, Caleb and Everly Schmitt; Chloe and Logan Counts; Zoey and Amaya D’Amico; sister-in-law, Helen (Gullickson) Storch; and many special nieces and nephews. Hazel is also survived by her dear friend, Erlene Fisher, and family.

The Gullickson family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at Wellington Place for their wonderful care of Hazel over the years.
