February 20, 1940 - December 19, 2022

Rosetta Rita Schmitt, 82 passed away peacefully on December 19, 2022, at the Gundersen Health System Hospital in West Union after battling pneumonia and other health issues.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at the St. Luke’s Catholic Church at 215 East Main St. St. Lucas, IA with Rev. Jim Goerend presiding. Burial will be in the St. Luke’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 26, 2022, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church and after 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning at the church.

She was born February 20, 1940, in the rural Calmar area to Herbert and Rose (Gerleman) Rothmeyer. She graduated from Calmar High School in 1958 and worked for Dr. Garfield Miller in Calmar as a receptionist. And later worked at the St. Lucas Catholic School in the cafeteria.

On August 15, 1957, she met Gerald Schmitt at a dance at the Sheep Shed in Little Turkey, they later married on November 28, 1959, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Festina. The couple made their home on the family farm southeast of St. Lucas, where they raised their two daughters, Lisa and Sandy. Rosie was a member of the St. Lucas Catholic Church, Rosary Society and the National Catholic Foresters.

Rosetta was very active in the family farming operation and proud that the farm is now a century and heritage legacy farm and was honored at the Iowa State Fair. She enjoyed playing cards, watching Dateline, going to casino’s, listening to country music old and new, traveling, and had a witty sense of humor. She enjoyed spending time with her husband, daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Gerald (Schimmel) Schmitt of 63 years, daughters Lisa (Sam) Hageman, Fort Atkinson, and Sandra (Ingvald) Sunde, Forest City. Grandchildren, Amber (Shane) Einck, Kirstie (Tyler) Juliar, Corey (Kelsi) Schroeder, Jenny (Adam) Gatton, Ryne (Amy) Sunde, and Tori (Jared) Dietzenbach.. Several great grandchildren with two more expected in 2023. She is also survived by her sister Ruth Huber, brother Lester (Liz) Rothmeyer. Her brother-in-law and sister-in-laws Edmund (Norma) Schmitt, Alex Schmitt, and Helen Noska.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Rose Rothmeyer, her in-laws, William and Anna Schmitt, brothers and sister-in-law. Linus (Elsie) Rothmeyer, Larry (Sandy) Rothmeyer. in-laws Della (Leo) Langreck, Lucy (Urban) Dietzenbach, Irma (Leonard) Bullerman, Arthur (Agnes) Schmitt, Gene Noska, and Shirley Schmitt.
