THE SILENT REAPER.
MRS. JOHN W. THUNE

In the death of Mrs. John W. Thune, which occurred on Friday last, the 2d, at her home in this city, another of the pioneer residents of Winneshiek county passed to her final rest. Mrs. Thune’s maiden name was Martha Louis. She was born at Voss, near Bergen, Norway, on February 19th, 1825. Her parents died when she was a child and she lived with different families until 24 years of age, when she came to America, in the spring of 1840, with the family of John Bragstad. They settled at Koshkonong, Wis., where they resided until 1851, when, with other pioneers, they came to Springfield township, Winneshiek county. On June 11, 1855, she was married to John W. Thune. To them a family of eight children was born, four of whom, two sons and two daughters, have passed away, leaving three daughters and one son to cherish the memory of a devoted mother. Mr. Thune died a number of years ago. In early life, Mrs. Thune was converted and became a member of the Methodist church, remaining faithful to her profession to the end of her life. During her later years she endured much suffering from the infirmities of old ago, and she often expressed a desire to “go home.” The funeral was held Monday from the home in Decorah, Rev. Young officiating, and also at the Methodist church in Springfield township, where the remains were interred.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows her maiden name as Graves. She is buried in the Washington Prairie Norwegian Methodist Cemetery.
