Died
At Fort Atkinson, Tuesday, October the 16th, 1871, at 6:30 p.m., D W SHIELDS, of consumption; aged 29 years.
The above named was born in Beaver County, Pa., where he was raised and and educated by an uncle, having lost his parents when quite young. He enlisted as a private, in the 85th Pa. Regiment, served three years in his country's cause where, by exposure in the Chickahominy swamps, he contracted the disease which resulted in his untimely death. His amiability of disposition, combined with his quiet, gentlemanly manner, won him friends wherever he went. To know him was to respect him.

At the time of his death he was acting in the capacity of Station Ag't of the Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway Co., In whose employ he had been for four years. The kind and solicitous manner in which the Ass't Superintendent, J.W. Sanborn, anticipated and provided for his every want during his illness, and the respect shown his remains, testify to his worth and the esteem in which he was held.

Decorah (Iowa) Republican, October 27th, 1871
