William Joseph Baumler “Wild Bill”, 83, of Ossian, Iowa died Sunday, October 23, 2022 at Aase Haugen Homes in Decorah, Iowa. William “Billy” was born on April 6, 1939 in Anamosa, Iowa, the son of Theresa A. (Franzen) Baumler and Raymond H. Baumler. Billy was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa and attended the parish school where he graduated from the 8th grade Class of 1958. Billy married Shirley Ann Miller on May 5, 1962 in St. Lucas, IA. To this union, four children were born. The couple later divorced in 1977.

Billy worked several jobs over the years. Billy operated a milk truck route for the St. Lucas Creamery and also drove truck for Franzen Implement in West Union, IA. For several years then after, Billy worked on the Duane and Shirley Bushman farm. From there, he worked at Egeland Tiling until his retirement in 2009.

Billy loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed many trips up North fishing with family and friends. He looked forward to deer camp each year where stories and laughter were sure to be had. He was an avid card player and could play for hours. For several years, he enjoyed bowling in a Men’s League in West Union, IA. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and their families. Billy liked to socialize as he could always get you to laugh and smile as he could be quite the entertainer. If Billy wasn’t having a good time, no one was. He was a friend to many, and will be deeply missed.

Billy is survived by three of his children, Lisa (Douglas) Nelson of West Union, Iowa, Dean (Kristie) Baumler of Ossian, Iowa and Brian (Karla) Baumler of Ossian, Iowa; his grandchildren, Joshua (Karen) Baumler, Melissa Zweibohmer (Jerry Moldenhauer), Justice Nelson, Dustin (Liz) Baumler, Evan (Adrianna) Baumler, Tanner (Ericka) Baumler, Derek (Desiree Grotegut) Baumler, Tiffany (Jessie Bennington) Baumler, Logan Baumler and Jordan Baumler; great-grandchildren, Michael Baumler, Hailey Baumler, Raelynn Baumler, Conner Baumler, Jaden Baumler, Harper Baumler, Willow Baumler and Blakely Baumler; his siblings, Dale Baumler of Anamosa, Iowa, Dennis (Pat) Baumler of St. Lucas, Iowa, Darlene Oberding of Dyersville, Iowa, Irene (Don) Lynch of New Hampton, Iowa; Daniel Baumler of St. Lucas, Iowa, Glen “Hopper” Baumler of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, Jay (Renee) Baumler of Irvine, California, Leon (Gail) Baumler of St. Lucas, Iowa, Ann (Dean) Schaufenbuel of St. Lucas, Iowa, John (Anjie) Baumler of Buckner, Missouri and Terry (Carl) Schmitt of Fort Atkinson, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Theresa and Raymond Baumler; his son, Joseph William Baumler; sister, Nancy Havel; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Schirmer and Gene Oberding; and his sister-in-law, Mick Baumler.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa. There will also be a one-hour visitation before mass time at the church on Friday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Friday, October 28, 2022 at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa with Rev. Nick Radloff as the celebrant.

Burial will follow at St. Luke Catholic Cemetery in St. Lucas, Iowa.

Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
