Betty Jean Monroe, 91, of Castalia, Iowa passed away Saturday, October 22, 2022 at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa. Betty Jean Jacobson was born on June 27, 1931 to Arnold and Hilda (Hanson) Jacobson in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and was active in her faith throughout her life. Betty was the oldest of nine children and grew up in the West Union area. She graduated from West Union High School in 1951.
Betty met Lloyd Eugene Monroe at a cousin’s wedding and they tied the knot on June 2, 1951 at Stavanger Lutheran Church in Ossian. Lloyd was drafted into the army and went for basic training at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. They then were stationed in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, it was there that they welcomed twin girls, Debra and Dianne and returned to the Castalia area shortly after. Four more children, Kristi, Kale, Neal and Ryan were born into this union.
Betty and Lloyd farmed near Castalia for thirty-eight years. Lloyd had a knack for collecting antique Minneapolis Moline tractors and Dodge cars and trucks and skillfully purchased most without Betty’s approval. The two enjoyed car club activities and participating in area parades, even earning grand marshal honors on a few occasions.
Betty was a natural nurturer through all stages of life- as a homemaker, home health aide and daycare provider well into her 80s. She was well known by law enforcement for her Jeff Gordon ways and would always have the freezer on the farm stocked with homemade cookies and gallons of Schwan’s ice cream. She was also known for her infectious laugh, quick wit and aggressive tickling abilities. Her baby whispering skills and scrumptious lefse and flatbread were second to none. Never one to mince words, she forged special relationships with each of her kids and grandkids. A skilled seamstress and talented crafter, Betty made all seventeen of her grandkids a special hand-stitched quilt for their high school graduation and she made mission quilts for over 20 years at Zion Lutheran. Norwegian through and through, she was feisty up to the very end.
Preceding Betty in death were her parents, husband, Lloyd Eugene Monroe in 2004; granddaughter, Tiffany Monroe in 1988; five brothers, Robert, Harold, Gordon, Lavern and John Jacobson; four sisters-in-law, Mary Jacobson, Judy Jacobson, Pat Jacobson and Darlene Jacobson; two brothers-in-law, Jim Monroe and Lyle Johansen. She was also preceded in death by her in-laws, Thomas and Ella (Schroeder) Monroe; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Merle (Juanita) Monroe and Vila Mae (Ralph Schultz) (Harvey) Reinhardt.
Surviving Betty are her six children, seventeen grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren; Debra (Alvin) Hageman of Decorah, Iowa, Amber (Chad) Bisinger, Addison and Kinley; Adam (Kate) Hageman, Kole, Aubrey and Hailey; Ashley (Jared) Zumbach, Lane , Landry, Lincoln and Leigh; April; Dianne (Stephen) Hageman of Ossian, Iowa; Valerie, Kimberly (fiancee’ Connor Whalen), Steven, Louis and Charles Andera; Stephanie; Timothy; Kristi (Harold) Hageman of Ossian, Iowa; Tevor (Tori) Hageman, Bradyn, Alayna, Mylee and Gavyn; Tara (Matt) Moro; Anthony and Maci; Trisha; Tabatha (Shane Lansing, Leyton and Lucca; Kale (Linda) Monroe of Castalia; Thomas (Talia) Monroe, Isabella, Malakai; Michelle (Derrek) Nesvik, Parker Willoughby, Levi, McKenzie; Andrew; Neal (Berit) Monroe of Ossian, Iowa; Collin (fiancee’ Megan O’Neill), John; and Ryan Monroe of Cresco, Iowa. Also surviving are her sisters, Margorie Monroe and Lois Johansen of West Union, Iowa and Judy (John) Hyman of Postville, Iowa; sister-in-law, Edna Jacobson of Mabel, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, Iowa. There will also be one hour visitation before services at the church on Friday.
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Friday, October 28, 2022 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, Iowa with Rev. Daryl Schultz as the officiant.
Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Castalia, Iowa.
