A telegram came from Spencer to Wm. Trouten last Thursday announcing the death of his brother-in-law John Bateman at that place. Mr. Trouten left for there immediately. Word received later reports his death very sudden from heart disease. About three weeks ago Mr. Bateman, who was at Cresco to attend the funeral of his mother, who was buried in our cemetery, was shaking hands with old time friends here. Mr. Bateman has many friends here who deeply sympathize with Mrs. Bateman and her daughter in their great bereavement.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born Sept. 3, 1849 and died July 1, 1908. He is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, Iowa.
