Obituary of Wm. Murdock: Again we are called upon to chronicle the death of a pioneer and old settler of Bluffton township. Mr. William Murdock died at his residence in our village on Mch. 24th, after a sickness of over two months’ duration. He had been ill for nearly two years and his family expected his demise at most any moment. He was the son of the late John and Katherine Murdock and came to this country with his parents when a young boy. Mr. Murdock was born in High street, city of Glasgow, Scotland, settling first with his parents in Pennsylvania, remaining there about seven years, when they emigrated to Iowa in 1855, settling in Bluffton township, where Mr. M. has lived ever since, except a few years when he participated in the civil war. Mr. Murdock was married on October 28th, 1862, to Miss Adaline Lewis, who survives him. This union was blessed with nine children, of which six are living. Three died in their infancy. When in 1862 the war bugle was sounded he forsook his anvil and forge and enlisted in Company D., Sixth Iowa Cavalry, and served in the regular army until the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged. The funeral was held from the house last Thursday, conducted by Rev. Densmore of Burr Oak. After leaving the house members of Col Hughes Post of Decorah, of which the deceased was a faithful member, took charge and the last sad rites were performed by the chaplain of the Post, Mr. Holcomb, a lifelong friend. The services at the grave were beautiful and many kind things were said by his old comrade. There were many beautiful floral offerings which were laid on his coffin by his comrades, and interment was made in the Bluffton cemetery. Mr. Murdock was a kind neighbor, always willing to help whenever called upon, never turned a deaf ear to unfortunate fellow men, and on account of his pleasant and cheerful disposition had made many friends among those who came in contact with him. Especially was he loved by the children as he always had a kind word for them. That he was held in a high esteem by them was fully demonstrated on the day of his funeral by the large concourse of them which followed his remains to their last resting place. He leaves to mourn his loss a beloved wife, four boys and two daughters, and a number of grandchildren. Our sympathies are extended to the bereaved family in their sad affliction.

Trasncriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born Nov. 5, 1832 and is buried in Bluffton Cemetery.
